Team + Individual Sports

Our goal is for each camper’s skills to improve in a measurable way during the camp season. We are not a competitive camp. The philosophy of Discovery is to instruct and coach, while not losing sight of the joy of the game. There is a weekly rotation of the different sports.

A wise Camp Director once said, “If the game is not fun, change the game”. Our Group Leaders keep this in mind so that campers continue to improve their skills, while having a ball!

Creative + Performing Arts

Our Standard Camp Program includes several opportunities to get creative! During Arts & Crafts, campers study different artists and mediums of art based on the theme of each week at camp. One week our campers might paint self portraits and the next make a bowl out of clay. Cooking provides our campers the opportunity to make healthy and delicious snacks, while learning about good nutrition choices and safety around the kitchen. Each summer, our campers also try out different styles of dance, such as hip hop, ballet, line dancing, and more!

Many elements of our Creative and Performance Arts activities are the highlight of the summer for our campers and keep our program well-rounded. Throughout the summer, campers work towards our all camp performance on Family Day. This is one of our biggest events each summer where campers share the dances and songs they have learned and practiced!

Adventure

Discovery’s program encourages our campers to try new things. Our Adventure activities allow campers to participate in a plethora of unique pursuits. Our Low Ropes Course and Team Initiatives elements support campers as they foster their team building skills. When campers reach the top of our 36′ Climbing Tower, they can ring the bell and experience the best view of our camp property. During Biking, campers travel to parks and nature preserves to explore and enjoy different settings. These exciting activities are some of the many reasons campers cannot wait to return to Discovery summer after summer.

Discovery Day Camp follows the Starfish Swim and Stroke School’s “Curriculum and Core Skills Achievement Stages”. Each stage includes Lead Up Skills, a Safety Skill Benchmark, and a Swim Skill Benchmark. All campers (except Explorers and Future Leaders) swim twice daily, weather permitting. Our pool’s temperature is always around 80 degrees! The first swim of the day is instructional and the second is recreational. We supply a towel and dry swimsuits after every swim period. Campers bring home reports of their swim progress (at minimum) every two weeks.

All Aquatics Staff hold current Star Aquatics Institute Lifeguard and Starfish Instructor certificates. In addition, all Group Leaders and Assistant Group Leaders hold current Starfish Instructor certificates. Many Group Leaders and Assistant Group Leaders also hold current Star Aquatics Institute Lifeguard certificates.

First Aid and CPR Training is required for all Staff.
